Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover (M177 Content)

The M177 air/oil separator hybrid catch cans final production pieces are now in effect.

The M177 is engineered with an oil separator that creates a positive feedback loop. As the volume of oil builds up (within the reservoir of the separators) vacuum increases.

The separators in turn begin to struggle emptying reservoirs, and the drains begin to block, blocked drains increase vacuum causing increased siphoning of oil vapors!

When the vapor siphoning rate becomes higher than the oil drain rate at the separators, the oil volume increases!

If the catch cans do not filter the oil then it begs the question of 'where will the oil go?', in conclusion more caught oil is better to allow the oil drain rate at the separator reservoir to catch up.

Pictured here are the hose diameters of the M177 vent plumbing. The plastic elbow decreases in size and acts as a bottle neck where the plastic is crimped in this photo below. This fitting is attached to vent the cylinder head:

Next, below is a view of the black plastic fitting attached to the separators, this is the other end of the hose above. This attaches right at the separator and essentially has the same diameter as the greater hose with the white inner liner.

Diameters compared, 63 MOTORSPORTS PTFE LINE(S) vs STOCK VENT LINE

Our engineers applied forms of the combined gas laws PV = nRT to use hose diameter to exponentially increase the ability to trap oil and not allow it to result in blockage at the separators.

The lesser inner diameter PTFE lined hose above is installed from the cylinder head vent to the lower catch can port, maintaining laminar flow throughout its travel.

The greater inner diameter PTFE lined hose above installs from the top catch can port back to the separators, effectively maintaining the final flow characteristics of the stock vent pipe.

The measurement of the inner diameter is more effective than making comparisons based on outer diameters. The outer diameter of any hose have zero effect on flow dynamics.
